Indonesia bids to take over hosting of 11th ASEAN Para Games


Indonesia has officially stated its intention to host the 11th ASEAN Para Games after the Board of Governors agreed to open a bid for an alternative host of the said biennial meet.

The Games was initially scheduled in Hanoi next month, but host Vietnam decided to withdraw due to the “complicated situation following the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.”

Chaired by H.E. Yi Veasna of Cambodia, the Board of Governors officially endorsed the cancellation of the meet in Hanoi in a virtual emergency meeting attended by nine countries. Laos was the only absentee at the meeting.

Following the endorsement, the Board opened the hosting bid “to ensure continuity of the biennial Games, which also saw the Manila 2020 Games cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indonesia, which hosted the 6th edition in 2011, put forward a proposal outlining its plan to stage the Games next year in Solo, more commonly known as Surakarta City in the island of Java.

The Board of Governors acknowledged Indonesia’s proposal and have instructed it to adhere to the bidding procedures that include proof of support from the Government as well as the WADA non-compliant issue.

Indonesia has until this month to submit all necessary requirements and preparation plans to take over the hosting job before careful deliberation to proceed will be conducted.

The Board of Governors has until January to make the final decision of the matter.
