Magnitude 5.4 quake strikes in waters off Davao Occidental -- Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) monitored a 5.4-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Davao Occidental on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 27.

Based on its earthquake bulletin, Phivolcs said the tremor occurred at around 2:01 p.m., with the epicenter traced 135 kilometers (km) southeast of Balut Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

The quake occurred at a depth of 82 km.

Phivolcs initially measured the earthquake at magnitude 4.8 but later revised it to magnitude 5.4.

It was felt as a "weak" tremor at Intensity III in Sarangani, Davao Occidental, while it was slightly felt at Intensity II in Kiamba and Malungon, Sarangani.

Lake Sebu, South Cotabato felt the quake at Intensity I or "scarcely perceptible."

Phivolcs' instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity I in General Santos City, Koronadal City, and Zamboanga City.

It said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs said aftershocks may occur due to this earthquake.
