Bienvenido Marañon said he will don the Philippine Azkals shirt for the first time when the pandemic-delayed AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 finally gets going on the first week of December in Singapore.

The naturalized player bared on his Instagram account Friday, Nov. 26 that he received a call-up to see action in Southeast Asia’s biggest football competition which will be played under a bubble setup in the Lion City.

“I will travel in a few days to Singapore to join the team and training hard to face (the AFF Suzuki Cup) with enthusiasm,” Marañon said.

Marañon became a Filipino citizen last July after a delayed process, but it was only last month that the star striker of United City was able to obtain a Philippine passport.

Having Marañon will be a big boost for the Azkals, whose lineup is still in processed of being finalized.

Football fans have voiced their concern if overseas-based Filipinos, particularly those playing for clubs in Thailand, can be available for the Suzuki Cup.

Those in Europe could likely be ruled out of joining the Azkals since the Suzuki Cup is not part of the FIFA international window.

The Azkals are in Group A with host Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar and Timor-Leste.
