DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said the three-day training course started on Nov. 5, benefiting registered nutritionists-dietitians (RNDs) and other allied medical professionals, who are part of the research project, entitled “Relationship of body composition to the functional capacity and quality of life of older persons in selected provinces in the Philippines.”

The project is part of the DOST-FNRI’s “Healthy Aging Program for PinoY (HAPPY) Senior Citizens.”

The training course "aims to develop and enrich their knowledge and skills on assessing and communicating with older persons and to learn other techniques on comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA),” de la Peña said.

The first two days of the three-day CGA training were held online on Nov. 5 to 6.

During the training, the PGH Geriatric Clinic CGA Form was introduced to the participants.

"The HAPPY project for seniors was also highlighted to give the other participants an overview about the study objectives. Also discussed were important strategies for communicating with older persons including non-verbal communication, common issues, and effective ways to develop relationships, adjust to changes in hearing, vision, language, and receptive abilities,” the DOST chief said.

He said the participants were given tips or pointers on how to conduct proper interviews.
