BACOLOD CITY — A police officer died after he figured in an altercation with a man, who was under the influence of liquor in Barangay Estefania here on Sunday.
Killed was Police Staff Sgt. Benjie Giron, 48, of Barangay Granada here, assigned as traffic investigator in Police Station 6.
Police Maj. Ritchie Gohee, head of Police Station 4, said Giron went to the shop of his cousin to get vulcanic soil on Sunday night, when he met the suspect identified as 27-year-old Regie Buatag of Talisay City, Negros Occidental, who was working at the shop.
Gohee said a heated argument then ensued between them, allegedly due to the behavior of the suspect towards the policeman.
Gohee said the suspect allegedly took a bladed weapon, while Giron drew his issued .9mm caliber as defense on his part. But they both grappled with the firearm, until it fired, hitting Giron’s stomach.
Giron passed away later that night at a private hospital.
Gohee said Giron also suffered other injuries, but they could not tell yet if he was stabbed, pending the autopsy results.
Gohee said Buatag was arrested and alleged that the police officer slapped him prompting him to get a knife. However, Gohee said they could not establish the said allegation.
Police recovered from the crime scene the bladed weapon and Giron’s issued .9mm caliber.
Homicide charges are being readied against Buatag.
