As early as now, hopes are high for Carlos Yulo to further continue his “Revenge The Tokyo” campaign until the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 21-year-old gymnast showed resilience and mental toughness at the 50th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan over the weekend after winning one gold and one silver medal.

He may have been unsuccessful in retaining his floor exercise world title after finishing fifth in the event, but destiny had other plans as he went on to rule the vault apparatus and settled for second in the parallel bars.

Yulo said he quickly moved on after missing the floor exercise gold medal and went to the competition venue a day after determined to resume his goal of avenging his heartbreaking debut Tokyo Olympics appearance.

“I accepted it and that’s my result. It’s not under my control anymore. I’m just glad that I’m safe after that (competition),” Yulo said in an interview with the Gymcastic YouTube channel.

Yulo said he was confident with his vault performance but admitted that nerves almost got into him when he was doing his parallel bars routine.

“I was really nervous. I was shaking while doing my routine,” he said.

“Vault, I know that I can do it anytime, but p bar (parallel bars), I’m not yet consistent. But I did it so I’m happy about it.”

“Revenge The Tokyo” has been Yulo’s mantra after the Tokyo Olympics last August where he missed his chance of making it into the floor exercise medal round. He, however, was a revelation in vault but fell short of making into the podium by placing fourth.

In a social media post, Yulo’s Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya said they are looking at competing in the All Japan Team Final on Dec. 10.

Yulo has been based in Japan under scholarship for almost half a decade, training under Kugimiya and attending university.
