San Juan remains only unbeaten team in PCAP chess


San Juan bested Team Paralympic in the Armageddon playoffs, 3-0, to remain the only unbeaten team in the third conference of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament over the weekend.

Brothers Naguingel and FIDE Master Narquingden Reyes edged FM Sander Severino and International Master (IM) Daniel Quizon, while Grandmaster Oliver Barbosa downed FM Roel Abelgas to give the San Juan Predators their 11th straight victory in as many outings.

San Juan and Team Paralympic ended the regulation tied at 10.5-all. The Predators first drew the first blood by winning the blitz event, 4.5-2.5, before the Paralympic guest squad prevailed in the rapid, 8-6.

Despite the defeat, Team Paralympic still remained on top of the Southern Division leaderboard with a 9-2 mark, while San Juan tightened its hold of the top spot in the Northern Division.

Meanwhile, Laguna, Caloocan and Pasig trailed behind San Juan with 10-1 cards.

The Laguna Heroes blasted the Sunrays, 19-2, before absorbing their first defeat at the expense of the Iloilo Kisela Knights, 12.5-8.5.

Caloocan crushed Surigao and Palawan with identical 16-5 scores even as Pasig routed Iloilo, 13-8, and Negros, 13.5-7.5.

In the Southern Division, Iloilo, Penang and Lapu-Lapu were tied at second to fourth places behind Team Paralympics with 7-4 marks.
