Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto delivered a commencement speech to Ateneo De Manila University’s graduating class of 2021 on Sunday, Oct. 24.

“We have to seek out the opinions of others… Let’s make an effort to listen to people from outside our echo chamber,” said Sotto in his speech.

He urged the graduating class to engage in discourse with those who hold opposing ideals.

The speech was addressed to the students of the Ateneo Graduate program, the School of Humanities, the John Gokongwei School of Management, the School of Science and Engineering, and the School of Social Sciences.

Sotto also joked about his role as a commencement speaker.

“Ngunit, sigurado ako na hinding-hindi niyo makakalimutan na sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon sa kasaysayan ng ating pamantasan, ang inyong commencement speaker akala nyo ay pormal na naka-barong, pero ‘yun pala nakasuot lamang ng shorts (However, I am sure that you will not forget that for the first time in our university’s history, the commencement speaker you thought was formal wearing a barong is in fact wearing shorts). Kidding aside, if I am kidding.”

Sotto is also a graduate of Ateneo De Manila University.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science at the Ateneo in 2011 and finished his masters in public management at the Ateneo School of Government in 2018.
