DSWD Secretary Rolando Joselito D. Bautista thanked China for the “remarkable” donation, which he described as a “invaluable gift” to the Filipino people, signifying the “unbreakable ties of unity” between the two countries.

"As such we witness another milestone of our alliance with the government of People’s Republic of China as we receive 2,000 metric tons of rice donation. This is vital in providing food assistance to families affected by disasters and to lockdown communities in light of COVID-19 pandemic,” he said in a message during the hand over ceremony of the rice donation on Thursday.

“Your valued contribution will definitely make a positive impact to thousands of lives of Filipinos.”

He assured Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian that the donation will be given to its rightful beneficiaries.

“It is our fervent hope that we remain ally and continue to strengthen our collaborative effort in combatting the impacts of the pandemic and calamities. Let us work together and further uplifting the quality of life of our people,” Bautista said.

Huang said the third shipment of 2,000 metric tons of rice is part of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s gesture to fulfill his promise to President Duterte that 10,000 metric tons of rice be given to the Philippines.

“The Chinese government has spared no efforts in preparing the supplies and donating the rice to the Philippines,” he said.

He said so far, more than 6,000 metric ton of rice have already arrived in the Philippines, helping a million Filipino households.

Huang said the rice donation “bears the profound friendship of the Chinese people to the Philippine people.”

“During the phone call with President Duterte last August, President Xi Jinping said that China always values integrity and keeps its word to friend.”

“With joint efforts of our two sides, we will do our utmost to accomplish the delivery of all the 10,000 metric tons of rice within this year. We hope the rice will be distributed to those in need in the fastest way so as to help them get through this trying time.”
