The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has agreed to teach effective ways of modern rice farming to inmates and personnel of the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Pueto Princesa City, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Thursday, Oct. 14.
In a statement, BuCor said a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between IPPF and TESDA was signed last Oct. 8.
It said the TESDA training “is not only to teach IPPF personnel but also, and more importantly, to add knowledge and skills to the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) about modern farming.”
“The agreement states the intent of Puerto Princesa School of Arts and Trades (PPSAT) in the implementation of the farmer's field school under the rice extensive services program and to utilize two hectares of agricultural land for the practical demonstration of farmers in inbreed rice farming,” it said.
The signing of the MOA was attended by TESDA Director General Isidro S. La Pena and IPPF acting superintendent C/Supt. Joel R. Calvelo.
Calvelo expressed his gratitude to TESDA and PPSAT as he pointed out that “the program will bring improvement in the agricultural projects of IPPF,” BuCor said.
