'Maring' death toll rises to 13 -- NDRRMC


Four more people died due to severe tropical storm "Maring" which increased the death toll to 13, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Wednesday morning, Oct. 13.

Based on the situational report released by the NDRRMC around 10:30 a.m., two of the new fatalities were recorded in Ilocos Sur while one each was noted in Benguet and Baguio City.

In Brgy. Tuding, Itogon, Benguet, a 32-year-old woman who was earlier reported missing was found dead after a landslide swallowed her house around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The incident happened while the victim was sleeping. Her body was found by the authorities later that day and it was revealed that she was pinned down by a concrete post that fell on her bed.

In Marosan Alley, Dominican Hill, Baguio City, a 52-year-old man was buried alive after saving his wife from a landslide that swept their house last Monday.

According to the NDRRMC, the victim and his family were evacuating when the landslide occured. The victim managed to push his wife to safety but he was buried alive. His two children aged four and 12 were missing as of this posting.

A 35-year-old woman also died when a landslide occured in Brgy. Tiagan, San Emilio, Ilocos Sur while, a 52-year-old man drowned after he was swept away by flashflood in Brgy. Candalican, Santa Cruz, Ilocos Sur. Both incidents happened last Monday.

Injured, missing

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC also reported that three persons were injured and nine others remained missing due to the effects of Maring.

The injured individuals were recorded in Brgy. Abatan, Buguias, Batangas when a landslide swept a residential area. The injured victims include a 26-year-old woman, a 35-year-old man, and a female whose identity was not disclosed.

The NDRRMC has also confirmed that a 33-year-old woman went missing in Brgy. Nagrebcan, Badoc, Ilocos Norte last Monday after she was swept away by strong current while crossing a river. The victim was identified as Emily Yadao.

In Brgy. Batang-Batang, Narra, Palawan, authorities were searching for a 35-year-old woman, a 19-year-old young man, an unidentified female, and an unidentified male who may have drowned while passing through a river last Monday.

A 21-year-old man also went missing on Tuesday morning after he tried to retrieve his family's agricultural equipment from their flooded barangay. The victim is believed to have drowned when he accidentally sank while moving to a deep portion of their house that was submerged in floodwater.

A 49-year-old man also went missing at the height of the bad weather in Brgy. Iraan, Rizal, Palawan.

Devastation

STS Maring had already left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) last Tuesday morning but its effects were still felt by residents in Northern and Southern Luzon.

A total of 6,111 families or 21,511 individuals were affected by the typhoon, of which, 1,513 families or 5,852 individuals were staying in evacuation centers.

Maring destroyed P493 million worth of crops, livestock and poultry, and fisheries in Ilocos Region (Region 1), Cagayan Valley (Region 2), and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Meanwhile, authorities were still assessing the damage to properties incurred in the affected regions.
