Negros city mayor contracts COVID-19

BACOLOD CITY – Cadiz City Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. is the latest local chief executive in Negros Occidental that tested positive for COVID-19.

"Despite all precautions and strict observance of all safety and health protocols at the office and during official business, I was infected by the virus,” Escalante said, in a statement posted on the official Facebook page of the city government.

Escalante said that he learned about his COVID-19 infection early this week, and does not know where he got infected.

He is now confined at a private hospital here.

Escalante said the COVID-19 pandemic did one very important thing, it revealed “our resilience as a people.”

Escalante asked the people of Cadiz for their understanding as he is currently recuperating from the infection.

He also urged the people of Cadiz to get their vaccines to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Mayors Pedro Zayco of Kabankalan City, Neil Lizares III of Talisay City, and Mark Golez of Silay City also recently tested positive for COVID-19.
