Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso congratulated journalist Maria Ressa for winning the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, Oct. 8.
“You just made us proud as Filipinos! Congratulations!,” said Domagoso in a statement.
The Manila mayor also said “press freedom should be practiced, any state should continue to respect that.”
Rappler CEO Ressa and Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov were awarded on Friday, Oct. 8, the Nobel Peace Prize for 2021 “for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.”
“As a journalist and the Rappler’s CEO, Ressa has shown herself to be a fearless defender of freedom of expression,” the Nobel Prize said in a statement.
“Rappler has focused critical attention on the Duterte regime’s controversial, murderous anti-drug campaign. The number of deaths is so high that the campaign resembles a war waged against the country’s own population.”
Ressa is the first Filipino to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
