Meguru Yamaguchi and James Jarvis contribute to new Uniqlo shirt collection launching Oct. 25
Global apparel retailer Uniqlo will release the Pokémon Meets Artists UT (UNIQLO T-shirt) collection on Oct. 25. Contributors to this collection of adults and kids T-shirts and sweatshirts are Meguru Yamaguchi, a New York-based artist who has become well known in his native Japan, and James Jarvis, a renowned British artist.
Meguru uses his signature brushstrokes to show courageous Pokémon in battle. The meticulous work and colors result in highly refined fashion items. James Jarvis presents playful Pokémon with cartoon-style illustrations. The simple, distinctive treatments of both artists enhance the individuality of Pokémon.
Meguru was born in Tokyo in 1984. He moved to the US in 2007, and lives in Brooklyn, New York. His signature traditional brushstrokes transcend the styles of borders and eras to sublimate contemporary expressions. His best-known piece is Out of Bounds, in which brushstrokes break out of the boundaries of the canvas to exist independently. He deconstructed and rebuilt that approach in his Splitting Horizon series.
James hails from London. His work has encompassed cartoons, comics, graphics, sculpture, and printmaking. He is particularly interested in art, language, philosophy, architecture, and skateboarding.
