Vice President Leni Robredo will finally announce her long-awaited decision whether or not to run as president on Thursday, October 7, her spokesman said on Tuesday.
Lawyer Barry Gutierrez, the vice president’s spokesman, said that Robredo will make the announcement at the Quezon City Reception House, where she holds office, at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
“VP Leni will make an important announcement this Thursday, Oct 7, at 11 am. Please stay tuned,” he said in a tweet.
Robredo is expected to announce her presidential bid after unity talks with Manila Mayor Isko Moreno and Senator Manny Pacquiao fell through.
For weeks, the vice president’s supporters have called on her through tweets and billboards to run as president in the 2022 polls.
Billboards that display “Let Leni Lead” are seen along C5 on Tuesday. This followed the billboard by #All4Leni, one of the groups supporting Robredo’s possible candidacy, can be found along northbound of the South Luzon Expressway between Bicutan and Sucat.
Her supporters also made the hashtag #LeniForPresident2022 routinely trend on social media site Twitter.
Robredo has remained mum about her political plans, even deciding not to attend her weekly radio show over dzXL on Sunday, Oct. 3. She insisted on pushing for a united opposition, which she believes to be the only way to defeat the continuation of a Duterte administration or the return of the Marcoses in Malacañang.
On Thursday, Sept. 30, opposition coalition 1Sambayan endorsed Robredo for president. While she thanked the endorsement, Robredo fell short of committing to the coalition and said she was still in a discernment process.
She asked her supporters to pray that she makes the best decision for the country.
