This was announced by the Department of Science and Technology–Science Education Institute’s (DOST-SEI) in a Facebook post.

“The deadline of submission for the 5th Indie-Siyensya is extended until October 30, 2021,” the post read.

“We are giving you more time to put together your best film and bring out the Scientist in You for a chance to win up to P100,000.”

The pioneering science filmmaking competition, which is now on its fifth run bannering the theme “The Scientist in Me,” is open to all Filipino students and out-of-school youth, teachers, amateur filmmakers, and science professionals who may join as individuals or in groups.

The competition has two categories: the “Youth Category” for high school, tertiary school and out-of-school youth aged 13-20, and the “Open category” for college students, teachers, amateur filmmakers, and even science professionals.

The film entry should have a running time of up to 10 minutes and should be in English, Filipino, or in any regional languages with English subtitles.

“Indie-Siyensya is back for the fifth time to promote film as a medium in communicating science,”DOST-SEI Director Dr. Josette Biyo said in a statement.

“This pioneering competition aims to use filmmaking in making scientific information accessible and in an entertaining manner. Given the rise of short-form videos at a time where we really can’t go outside much, we believe that the visual media will continue to emerge as the platform-to-be for science education.”

The DOST-SEI said entries will be judged based on the following criteria: Scientific Content, Execution of Idea and Film Techniques.

The recipient of the Best Film award will receive a cash prize worth P 100,000, P 50,000 for the second prize, and P 30,000 for the third prize.

Two entries (one per category) will be conferred Viewers’ Choice award with a cash prize of P20,000.
