Four persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) , who were believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA), were killed while a jail guard was injured in an escape attempt at the Liangga Jail District in Surigao del Sur on Sunday, Sept. 26.
Chief Insp. Xavier Solda, spokesman of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), said the escape attempt led to an eight-minute shootout at around 7 a.m.
“Ang mga nasawing PDL ay hinihinalang miyembro ng communist terrorist group na New People’s Army na nagawang makumbinsi ang iba pa (PDLs) upang isagawa ang nasabing pagtakas (The fatalities were suspected to be members of the communist terrorist group New People’s Army who were able to convince the others to join them in the said escape),’’ Solda said.
He said that the incident started when 11 inmates attacked a jail guard who was then preparing the breakfast of the inmates.
“The gaurd on duty was opening the gate to bring in the breakfast,” said Solda.
“Naoverpower nila yung duty na nagbubukas ng gate selda at nagawa nilang makalapit sa secondary gate. Yung duty natin sa secondary gate ay nagawa pang magwarning shot subalit dahil na rin sa bilis ng mga pangyayari at dami ng sumugod sa kaniya, maging siya ay naoverpower din at naagaw ang baril nito (They (PDLs) overpowered the guard on duty manning the cell gate but they were able to get near the secondary gate. The personnel on duty in the secondary gate fired a warning shot but due to the sudden incident and the many persons going towards him, he was also overpowered and his gun was forced out of his possession),’’ he added.
Following the incident, BJMP leadership immediately placed the BJMP CARAGA Region on red alert.
“Nalulungkot man kami sa pangyayari, magsilbi sana itong babala sa ating mga PDL na nais gumawa ng panibagong paglabag sa batas (We are saddened by the incident, let this serve as a warning to our PDL who might want to commit another lawlessness)”, Solda said.
