San Juan, Iloilo stay unscathed in PCAP chess

San Juan and Iloilo blasted their rivals to remain unscathed in five appearances in the third conference of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament Wednesday.

The San Juan Predators clobbered the Olongapo Rainbow Team 7, 14-7, and the Cavite Spartans, 16-5, to stay at the helm in the Northern Division, while the Iloilo Kisela Knights crushed the Camarines Soaring Eagle, 18.5-2.5, and the Cebu City Machers, 18.5-2.5, to tighten their grip of the top spot in the Southern Division.

International Master Rolando Nolte, Woman IM Jan Jodelyn Fronda and IM Ricardo De Guzman spearheaded San Juan with their victories in their blitz and rapid duels against Olongapo, while Grandmaster Oliver Barbosa both drew his matches with Levi Dano Mercado in Board 1.

The Predators squeaked past the blitz event, 4-3, but dominated the rapid, 10-4, on four wins, two draws and one defeat.

Against Cavite, San Juan swept the blitz, 7-0, and ruled the rapid, 9-5.

Iloilo, meanwhile, banked on its 12-2 triumph in rapid on five wins and two draws, while nearly sweeping the blitz, 6.5-0.5, against Camarines.

The Kisela Knights also almost swept the blitz event against the Machers, 6.5-0.5, with GM Joey Antonio, Karl Viktor Ochoa, Woman FIDE Master Cherry Ann Mejia, National Master John Michael Silvederio and Mark Joseel Mariano triumphing against their rivals and Fritz Bryan Porras drawing with Duane Borgonia.
