For the first time in 74 years, the Miss Ireland beauty pageant crowned its first black winner.
Pamela Uba, 26, a medical scientist, said that "it feels amazing" to be the first black winner in Miss Ireland.
"I'm the first and it feels amazing - people are looking up to me and I never thought I'd be in that position," said Uba, in a report by BBC News.
Uba, her parents and three siblings moved to Ireland from South Africa when she was seven years old.
"I've been a frontline worker since the pandemic started, and it's been crazy. We had to do a lot to try to get in front of this wave that we were all expecting to come last year," she told Radio 1 Newsbeat.
Uba will represent Ireland at the Miss World beauty pageant in Puerto Rico in December.
