Standing by the cross of Jesus

Reflections today

We cannot imagine what mothers go through in family life. To be sure, the same with fathers. And yet there is something perhaps that is unique to motherhood. That sense of being the focal point, the stabilizer, the organizer, the one that holds things together. The Blessed Mother, Mary, never would have imagined her life would turn out the way it did. After all, she was just another village woman like anyone else in her time and place. Already at the outset, Simeon reminded her that a sword would pierce her heart so that the thoughts of many would be revealed. And this was confirmed in the course of her Son Jesus’ life. But she could have just simply stayed at home while her Son was out there ministering to people. But she chose to be also a disciple of her Son, following him everywhere, and thereby also suffered everything that he went through. The culmination of Mary’s sorrows was the foot of the cross where she witnessed the brutal and slow death of her beloved Son. But like many others there who had clung on to his words, she must have also kept the fire of hope burning in her heart, that all this evil was not the final word. And so may the world’s mothers learn from Mary’s example: obedient to the Father’s will and faithful disciple of her Son to the end. Do we realize how important our mothers are in our life? How much she suffers if only to give us the best care?

GOSPEL • Jn 19:25-27 [or Lk 2:33-35]

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
