'Jolina' onslaught: 3 fishermen rescued from submerged boat in Occidental Mindoro

Three local fishermen were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) when their fishing boat was damaged and submerged in water during the harsh weather condition spawned by tropical storm “Jolina” in Occidental Mindoro on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

The PCG, in an incident report, identified the fishermen as Jimuel Villanueva, Jonnel Magramo, and Norlie Conchada.

Despite the bad weather, the fishermen allegedly went out to fish in the coastal area of Barangay Sta. Lucia, the PCG said.

However, due to the harsh sea condition, the fishermen eventually decided to take shelter off Dongon Point in Barangay San Nicolas, Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro.

While stranded at sea, the fishermen encountered huge waves that battered the boat’s outrigger and damaged its hull. They issued a distress signal to ask for help.

Upon picking up the distress signal, the PCG Station Occidental Mindoro deployed a search and rescue team to locate the fishermen.

The PCG said the rescue team rendered immediate assistance and ensured that the fishermen were in good physical condition before they were turned over to their respective families.
