2 inmates die as detainee goes into shooting rampage inside Or. Mindoro jail

An inmate of the Oriental Mindoro Provincial Jail allegedly ran amuck and went into a shooting spree before shooting himself on Tuesday, Sept. 7., the local police reported.

Lt. Col. Imelda Tolentino, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 4B, said investigation is now being conducted on how 41-year old inmate Edison Sampaga got hold of a 9mm pistol which he used in the shooting rampage.

Sampaga, who was facing two criminal charges relating to violation of firearms law, died on the spot while one of the inmates he shot, 36-year old male inmate Lowelyn Mendoza was declared dead in the hospital.

The four other victims are undergoing treatment at the Oriental Mindoro Provincial Hospital.

Based on the investigation, Sampaga suddenly shot five inmates at around 2 a.m. inside the Selda 1 of the provincial jail located in Calapan City.

Those shot were Mendoza; Jeffrey Bajo Delos Reyes, 37; Christian Encarnado Licuan, 45; Hector Culla Abes, 41; Mark Belleza Dela Cruz, 42; and, Alberto Lubusan Ebueza, 21.

It was not immediately clear why Sampaga went into a shooting rampage and targeted the five victims.
