As the Catholic Church observes the Season of Creation from Sept. 1 to Oct. 4, Manila Archbishop Jose F. Cardinal Advincula called on the faithful to remember to “thank God daily for the gift of creation.”
His Eminence, in his homily at the Manila Cathedral during the recent opening of the 9th Season of Creation, urged the faithful to be “more appreciative of God’s creations by remembering to thank Him every day.”
“Let me invite you beginning today (Sept. 1) until Oct. 4. Let us thank God each day for the gift of creation. Every day, choose one gift to thank God for. Today, for example, I thank God for the gift of the sun. Tomorrow, I will thank God for the gift of air. One gift to thank God each day. This way, we will become more appreciative of the gift of creation,” the cardinal said.
The Church leader stressed showing appreciation for God’s creations makes for a responsible steward or caretaker.
“When we do not recognize the gifts that we receive, we fail to become responsible stewards. And once we fail to be responsible stewards and start acting as if they were our possessions, we will never share them with others as gifts. We may even use the gifts to take advantage of others,” he said.
Cardinal Advincula also called on the faithful to “make courageous choices for a simple and environmentally sustainable lifestyle.”
The Catholic Church observes Sept. 1 to Oct. 4, Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, as the Season of Creation.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “A Home for All, Renewing the Oikos” or the House of God.
