5-magnitude quake hits Biliran


A magnitude 5 earthquake struck Biliran on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 2, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The Phivolcs said the tectonic quake occurred at 3:23 p.m., and had a depth of focus of 5 kilometers (km).

Its epicenter was plotted 6 km northwest of Biliran town.

The agency has raised the quake’s magnitude level from an earlier 4.9 to 5.

Intensity V or “strong” shaking was felt in Biliran, Naval, Almeria, and Cabucgayan, Biliran.

Intensity IV or “moderately strong” quake was experienced in Culaba, Caibiran, and Kawayan, Biliran; Calubian and Leyte, Leyte Intensity III or “weak” shaking was observed in Maripipi, Biliran; Ormoc City; Capoocan, Carigara, Isabel, and Kanaga, Leyte.

Intensity II or “slightly felt” shaking was monitored in Palo and Jaro, Leyte; Guadalupe City, Cebu; Masbate City.

The agency has also measured Intensity VI in Naval, Biliran; Intensity III in Carigara, Leyte; Intensity II in Palo and Alangalang, Leyte; and Intensity I in Abuyog, Leyte and Catbalogan City, Samar.

State seismologists warned that damages and aftershocks are expected following the temblor.
