The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis takes the backseat this morning as the Philippines successfully launched Maya 3 and Maya 4, its first university-built cube satellites that are headed to the International Space Station (ISS).

There, too, is the ouster of President Duterte as chairperson of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) after Senator Koko Pimentel was reportedly elected to the post by the faction led by Senator Manny Pacquiao.

PhilHealth has also temporarily withdrawn a controversial circular suspending the payment of claims made by hospitals.

These are among the top stories at the start of this week, August 30, 2021, which is also National Heroes Day in the Philippines.

Philippine Red Cross (PRC) medical frontliners carefully assist an elderly as she makes her way to a PRC quarantine facility on San Marcelino Street in Manila on Sunday, August 29, 2021. The elderly was among 34 senior residents and personnel of the Hospicio de San Jose, who are now being monitored by PRC staff after contracting the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). (Ali Vicoy)
