“Napatawad na po namin siya (We have forgiven him).”
The relatives of Sonia and her son Frank Anthony Gregorio said they have forgiven dismissed Police Staff Sergeant Jonel Nuezca and finally found peace after he was sentenced to a maximum jail term of 80 years on Thursday, Aug. 26.
Mark Christian Gregorio, the victims’ son and brother, said their family was very happy over the court’s decision as the dismissed policeman was found guilty of two counts of murder in the bloodied killing of Sonia and Frank Anthony in Paniqui, Tarlac in December last year.
“Masaya po kami buong pamilya po dahil ‘yun yung binabang hatol ng korte at ‘yun po sabi ni papa at least napanatag na siya na makakapagtrabaho na po siya and may peace of mind na po kaming lahat (We, the whole family, are happy with the court’s decision and my father said that he is calm and assured as he go back to work. We all have peace of mind),” Mark Christian said in an interview over DZMM Teleradyo on Friday, Aug. 27.
Mark Christian also bared that Nuezca did not personally apologize for brutally shooting his mother and brother.
He, however, said that he felt that “deep inside” Nuezca wanted to apologize for the crime he committed.
“Siguro po personally hindi po siya makakahingi ng sorry kasi kumbaga wala naman po siyang communication sa amin pero feeling ko deep inside gusto niya humingi ng sorry (Maybe personally he can’t apologize because we don’t have communication with him but I feel deep inside he wants to apologize),” Mark Christian said.
“Ang amin lang po nila papa napatawad na po namin siya ‘yun nga lang po kelangan niyang pagdusahan yung mga nagawa niyang kasalanan (For us, including my father, we have forgiven him. However, he needs to suffer for the sins that he committed),” he added.
In an 18-page decision dated Aug. 26, Judge Stela Marie Q. Gandia-Asuncion of Paniqui Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 106 found Nuezca “guilty beyond reasonable doubt of the crime of murder (two counts) as defined and penalized in Article 248 of the Revised Penal Code” for the deaths of Sonia and her son Frank Anthony.
Judge Asuncion cited that among the evidence presented by the prosecution was the mobile phone video recording of the incident that went viral online.
Meanwhile, Mark Christian thanked those who helped them, including the Paniqui, Tarlac policemen for securing their safety during the investigation of the fatal incident.
“Madami pong tumutulong po sa amin na yun po pinangkukuhanan po namin ng lakas hanggang sa makamit po namin itong hustisya (There are many people who helped us, from them we gain courage and strength until we achieve justice),” he added.
Prior to the shooting in December last year, relatives of Nuezca figured in a heated altercation with Frank who was accused of using pyrotechnic materials near the house of Nuezca.
Nuezca reportedly rushed to the area and had an altercation with the victims.
The entire incident was captured on video, including the portion when Nuezca suddenly shot Sonia and Frank in the head and pumped more bullets as they fell to the ground.
