Cebu to remain under GCQ until Sep. 7

CEBU CITY – Rising new infections and deaths notwithstanding, the province of Cebu will remain under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) until September 7.

The new classification placing the province under a relaxed form of community quarantine was announced Saturday, August 28.

The province, composed of 44 towns and six component cities, has been experiencing an increase of not just new infections but also COVID-19 fatalities.

The province’s COVID-19 deaths have been in double digits in the past few days.

Data from the Department of Health Central Visayas showed that last August 23, the province had 36 COVID-19 deaths.

After recording just eight deaths last August 24, the province logged 42 deaths on August 25.

The fatalities’ steady rise continued when the province recorded 53 deaths on August 26 and 50 on August 27.

As of August 27, the province had the most active cases in Central Visayas with 5,631 followed by Cebu City with 4,600.

Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia has placed 11 areas under modified enhanced community quarantine “with heightened restrictions” due to their high number of COVID-19 infections.

Since the pandemic struck last year, the province already tallied 30,483 COVID-19 cases with 23,329 recoveries and 1,523 deaths.
