On a day when the number of new cases breached the 10,000-mark for the first time in months, hospital utilization increased as the dreaded Delta variant of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was reportedly detected in all the 17 cities and municipality of Metro Manila on the first day of the imposition of enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the metropolis.

These transpired as the government’s vaccination rollout tried to keep up with the surge of infections by setting another record of over 710,000 jabs in a single day, while a Lung Center of the Philippines (LCP) official confirmed that there is an ongoing clinical trial for an oral antiviral drug that could be taken to treat COVID-19 patients with mild or moderate symptoms.

These are among the top stories this Friday afternoon, August 6, 2021.
