CEBU CITY – Health authorities here reiterated the importance of vaccination as majority of recent COVID-19 deaths were unvaccinated.

Dr. Gerardo Aquino, medical chief of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), said all the five COVID-19 mortalities recorded in the hospital as of July 28 were unvaccinated.

Aquino admitted that there were also vaccinated persons who were admitted in VSMMC but most of admitted patients were unvaccinated.

VSMMC data showed that there were 113 confirmed COVID-19 patients admitted in their hospital and 94 are unvaccinated, Aquino said.

“It is already proven that vaccination is important aside from observing minimum health protocols. Everybody is enjoined to get vaccinated,” said Aquino.

Aquino explained that getting vaccinated does not mean one is 100 percent protected from COVID-19 especially if the exposed to a high viral load.

“But the difference is if you are vaccinated, you will be either asymptomatic or you’re going to have mild symptoms. For unvaccinated, there is a big possibility that you will either be moderate, severe, or critical,” Aquino said.

Aquino also advised the public to get whatever vaccine is available.
