Local stars comfort Nesthy Petecio, reiterate she doesn’t need to apologize for silver medal finish

Lea Salonga was among celebrities who supported boxer Nesthy Petecio, who yielded to Japan’s Sena Irie to settle for the silver medal in the women’s featherweight (54-57kg) division at the Tokyo Olympics.

Recall that after the fight, Nesthy quickly apologized for not bringing home another gold medal.

“Pasensya na po kayo, silver lang nakayanan ko. Ginawa ko po lahat kanina sa taas ng ring. Salamat po ng marami sa dasal at supporta niyo. Higit sa lahat sa Diyos! At safe kami pareho ng kalaban ko. Babalik po tayo Mas Malakas,” she wrote on Twitter.

Lea reposted it and told the latter that she doesn’t need to be sorry.

“Hindi dapat humingi pa ng paumanhin sa pagkapanalo ng medalyang pilak. Napakataas ng iyong nakamit. Mabuhay ka! #taketheNESTHYplunge #Tokyo2020 #Olympics,” she said.

Alex Gonzaga also expressed support for Nesthy.

“Aaaw. Nakakaiyak naman ito. You did your best Nesthy at kasama mo lahat ng PINOY icelebrate ang tagumpay mo!!! We are so proud of you!!!”

Note that Nesthy is the Philippines first female medalist in the said sport.

Although she is the third boxer to win an Olympic silver medal after Anthony Villanueva (1964 Tokyo Games) and Onyok Velasco (1996 Atlanta Olympics).

Anyway, Karylle also noted how inspiring Nesthy is.

“We are so inspired by you! Salamat Nesthy. Please wag ka humingi ng pasensya. Salamat salamat Salamat at congratulations!”

Regine Velasquez also reacted, saying: “Walang dapat ihingi ng paumanhin, binigyan mo ng napakalaking karangalan ang bansa natin. Mabuhay ka Nesthy.”

The athlete acknowledged the said advice and liked the Asia’s Songbird’s post.

“Lupet niyo pa rin lahat!” Luis Manzano added.
