Senator Manuel “Lito” Lapid on Wednesday July 28 filed a resolution, PSR No. 800, which seeks to congratulate and commend Hidilyn Diaz for winning the Philippine’s first Olympic gold medal.
Senate Resolution 800 of Lapid, a sportsman, stated that Diaz has brought honor and pride to the country, after winning the women’s 55-kilogram-weightlifting event of the Tokyo Olympics, with an Olympic record of 224 kilograms on July 26, 2021.
Diaz’s victory has also ended the country’s almost century-long Olympic gold medal drought. In the said even, Diaz bested the world record holder, Liao Quiyun of China who finished with 223 kilograms.
The Philippine Senate, meanwhile, has on several occasions given recognition and commendation to outstanding Filipinos for their contribution in showcasing our nation’s promising potential in the various fields and disciplines of Sports and in bringing pride and honor to the country by winning in international competitions.
Lapid said he is one of the millions of Filipinos lauding and thanking Diaz for giving honor to the country.

Hailing from Zamboanga City, Diaz also became the first Filipino athlete to win double Olympic medals after she won her silver in thee women’s 53-kilogram category at the 2016 edition of the quadrennial meet in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
