Makati City provides free eye care services to residents

The local government unit (LGU) of Makati City is offering free eye checkup, refraction, and eyeglasses to Makati residents.

Dubbed as “Sagip Mata (Eye Rescue)”, the project aims to provide free eye care services to residents of Makati City.

The project was the brainchild of Makati City Vice Mayor Monique Lagdameo.

According to the LGU, interested individuals only need to call the office of the vice mayor at 8870-1130 to avail of free eye care services.

In the 2018 Philippine National Blindness Survey and Eye Disease Study, it was found out that vision impairment and blindness rank among the major concerns in the country with a current prevalence rate of 1.98 percent.

This study was conducted by the Philippine Eye Research Institute of the National Institute for Health.

Such represents 1.11 million Filipinos with cataract, 400,000 with uncorrected error of refraction, nearly 300,000 with glaucoma, and 200,000 with maculopathy.

More than four million Filipinos are living with undiagnosed eye problems that need to be addressed, the study showed.
