The hammer meets the gavel on July 24, 2021, 11 a.m., where the best of the East comes together with the best of the West at Gavel&Block’s “interiors” online auction. The lineup, which has been coined as “Fil-Pan-Asian,” consists of art, décor, and furniture that highlights examples from amusing categories appealing to any and every type of collector. The sale also serves as a fundraiser in partnership with Hands On Manila for the benefit of at-risk families in Pililia, Rizal.

To start off the list would be for ceramic lovers. The auction will exhibit antique and vintage celadon pieces from China and Japan, which are complemented by a selection of unique books that would also talk about Asian ceramics. On the same note, Chinoiserie would also make an appearance in the sale, with intriguing pieces such as a rare porcelain cup service for 12 from the Daoguang period, a 19th century gilt leather chest, an intricately inlaid Rosewood vintage wedding cabinet, a vintage dining set for eight, and a charming variety of figurines in wood and porcelain. The auction also caters to avid fans of K-Dramas, featuring vintage Korean cabinets that display a butterfly motif, which is a distinguishing nature motif found in Korean residences.

Of course, the sale wouldn’t be complete without signature fine art and furniture from our very own Philippine artists and craftsmen. Followers of local art will enjoy offerings from the likes of National Artists BenCab, Cesar Legaspi, and Arturo Luz, as well as modern and contemporary artists Juvenal Sanso, Lee Aguinaldo, Nena Saguil, Lydia Velasco, Romulo Olazo, and Charlie Co.

LYDIA VELASCO ‘Harvest,’ 2009, Oil on canvas. An inlaid escribania/writing desk from Bulacan in narra wood, 2nd quarter, 20th century

An inviting home with Filipino fine artwork would go well with a well-curated selection of exquisite Philippine furniture, namely, a four-post chest of drawers from Bulacan in warm Narra, a rare Kamagong caballero cabinet from Cavite, a Manila chest of drawers in extremely dense Balayong wood, and a four-leaved Baliuag “magic” table made in the early 1900s from Bulacan.

Rounding up the strong lineup of ‘“Fili-Pan-Asian” pieces are original fine art prints by distinct and well-known names in Western art such as Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, and Joan Miro—a perfect introduction for first-timers in the local auction scene.

HERMAN MILLER AND VITRA BY ISAMU NOGUCHI. A brand new 'Noguchi Coffee Table,’ 1944 design, Solid wood base in black poplar

The local art community is also showing its support to the cause, with artists like Norberto “Lito” Carating, Betsy Westendorp, Remy Boquiren, Ricky Ambagan, and John Paul Duray fully donating their art pieces to the sale. CWC Interiors is also generously donating a 75th anniversary Eames Elephant piece in stained grey—an uber-desirable collectible for enthusiasts and design lovers as only 999 editions were produced.
