5.4-magnitude quake rocks parts of Mindanao

A moderately strong earthquake measuring 5.4-magnitude on the Richter scale has jolted parts of Mindanao on Sunday morning, July 18, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the tremor at 37 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental around 8:09 a.m.

The earthquake was "strong" at Intensity V in the municipality of General Generoso.

Phivolcs said it was "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in Mati City, Davao Oriental, and was "weak" at Intensity III in Tampakan and Tupi in South Cotabato.

It was also felt as a "slight shaking" at Intensity II in Davao City, General Santos City, Kidapawan City, and Kiamba, Sarangani.

Meanwhile, it was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Arakan, Cotabato.

Phivolcs said that aftershocks and damage to structures are expected due to this earthquake.
