Lord of heaven and earth

REFLECTIONS TODAY

At the theophany at Mount Horeb, the Lord appears to Moses in fire flaming out of the bush. He reveals himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Because of his covenant with Abraham, the Lord will deliver the children of Israel from the oppression of the Egyptians. He then tells Moses, “I will send you to Pharaoh to lead my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt” (Ex 3:10).

This faithful and saving God is “Lord of heaven and earth,” for he has created all things and supports them in existence. He is the God whom the Israelites worship and adore. He is also the Father of Jesus whom he praises for his gracious will. As God revealed himself to Moses as one who hears the cry of the poor and the oppressed, now through Jesus he reveals himself to the childlike. The “childlike” are the opposite of the arrogant, the powerful, and the wise in this world. They are the humble and simple people who put their trust in God and are open to Jesus’ teachings. Indeed, the Lord exalts the lowly but humbles the proud.

GOSPEL • MATTHEW 11:25-27

At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”
