This ambitious open-world RPG done right may just be the future of mobile gaming. Plus, all the details you need to know before playing it
In the ‘60s DC and Marvel ushered in the Silver Age of comics as they reintroduced superhero titles with great commercial success. In 2008, the latter had a breakthrough in the movie industry after creating their own cinematic universe starting with Iron Man (2008). Marvel grew more successful in the entertainment industry with the conception of Marvel Television and Marvel Studios, producing several series and films one after another.
This year, Marvel aims at yet another milestone, this time in the gaming scene with the development of a very promising mobile game called Marvel Future Revolution. Marvel Entertainment has created its latest open-world, role-playing video game with global mobile game publisher Netmarble Corp.
This new game is a follow-up to Netmarble’s six-year-old hit Marvel: Future Fight. The gameplay and story are, of course, totally different. How so? The sheer scale of it. It is the first grand-scale open-world RPG game starring superheroes on mobile. So, again, if executed properly, this title would be a game-changer. That’s AAA-quality graphics, an original story, iconic superheroes, and a mode of up to 50 players in simultaneous combat in one game!
Players are allowed to control a lineup of famous Marvel superheroes and roam around five worlds. The story begins when various versions of planet Earth converge in the multiverse to form an entirely new “Primary Earth.” You command agents of the “Omega Flight” superhero team to battle an onslaught of supervillains.
There are eight playable superheroes at the start namely, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Black Widow, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Star-Lord, and Storm. These characters are customizable and can be outfitted in an extensive collection of iconic costumes from throughout the Marvel Universe, with a tremendous selection of more than 400 million costume combinations per hero to choose from. Meanwhile, baddies include Red Skull, Baron Mordo, M.O.D.O.K., Green Goblin, and Red Goblin.
Simon Sim, president of Netmarble US, believes that the game will catapult the franchise fans to another level. “The game promises a fun and engaging experience for Marvel diehards and casual mobile gamers alike, offering unique action RPG gameplay on a massive scale,” he says.
The game uses a squad system, giving players the opportunity to play and level up several characters together in story mode. As players progress, multiplayer contents unlock.
There is player versus player or PvP modes with the number of players ranging from one-on-one to 10-versus-10 matches. Blitz/Raids mode is a player versus environment or PvE battle against villains like Kingpin, Loki, Ultron, even Mad King, Thanos. But the most interesting mode is the Dark Zone, a real-time massive free-for-all consisting of 50-players against colossal bosses and one another.
“From the gleaming spires of New Stark City to the shadowed alleyways of Hydra Empire, players around the globe will be thrilled with the vast vistas waiting for them to explore in the wild open-world crafted by our friends at Netmarble,” said Bill Rosemann, VP of Creative, Marvel Games. “Whether you’re soaring through the skies as Storm or barreling through enemies as Captain America, players can live out their Super Hero dreams on an unprecedented scale filled with all the action, drama, humor, and fun that fans expect from Marvel.”
“Our ongoing collaboration with Netmarble has allowed us to bring the expansive worlds, exciting characters, and fan-favorite stories from the Marvel Universe to mobile gamers seamlessly,” explains Danny Koo, director of product development, Marvel Games. Danny is a video games industry veteran with 17 years of experience. He has worked with companies such as Sierra Entertainment, Activision, and Disney.
The potential of Marvel Future Revolution is enormous. And we’re hopeful that they deliver. Chances are they will, considering that Netmarble and Marvel Entertainment have worked together before to produce Marvel: Future Fight.
