Inspired by the acclaimed director’s most popular films

The Mamoru Hosoda UT collection

In 1991, Mamoru Hosoda started his career in animation, which later on turned into a passion for directing. He directed “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” in 2006 and his film was nominated for an Annie Award for Outstanding Directing in an Animated Feature Production in 2011. During the same year, he was also nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Animated Feature Film at the 91st Academy Awards for his seventh film “Mirai.”

Acclaimed film director, Mamoru Hosoda

Recently, UNIQLO announced that it will release a collection inspired by Mamoru Hosoda’s Animation Work on Aug. 30, 2021. The collaboration with the Japanese film director from Studio Chizu features three designs that commemorate “Belle,” an animated feature film that will premiere in Japan on July 16. The collection also includes designs highlighting Mamoru’s popular films, “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” “Summer Wars,” and “The Boy and the Beast.”

‘The Girl Who Leapt Through Time’ UT design

This upcoming collection aims to inspire wearers by featuring key characters in Mamoru’s films who embody a common theme of living life to the fullest and overcoming adversity. The UNIQLO T-Shirt or UT design for “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” presents a memorable scene in which the main character, Makoto Konno, prevents a situation from occurring—the “01” on the left sleeve portrays the remaining number of time leaps that she can make. For the “Summer Wars” shirt, the main character solves a cypher to avert the story’s greatest crisis and a screenshot of unlocking the password. Lastly, “The Boy and the Beast” exhibits the protagonist who grew up without relatives, later on becoming a proficient swordsman to live a strong life.
