ALCALA, Pangasinan – A 37-year-old man burdened by problems in life attempted to jump from the rooftop of a four-story building at the Arboleda National High School in Barangay San Pedro Ili but was rescued by calm and collected police and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) personnel here Thursday, June 24.

Police Staff Sgt. Violeta Perez of the Alcala police Women’s Desk said Conci Flores of Barangay San Pedro Ili climbed to the rooftop of the school at around 12 noon.

A concerned citizen saw the shirtless Conci and reported him to authorities who immediately proceeded to the school.

Joint police and BFP personnel, along with Flores’ son, calmly talked to Conci who yielded after an hour. Conci was visibly shaken but authorities managed to soothe his nerves.

Perez described the scene as heartbreaking.

“Nakakagulat at nakakadurog ng puso ang mga pangyayari lalo na nandoon pati anak niyang binata na nakikiusap, at sa bawat paglapit ng anak ay hakbang naman ng tatay sa rooftop papalayo, umabot na sa gutter na maaring ikahulog na niya, naging kalmado lang ang awtoridad, sinabing tutulungan siya ayusin ang problema niya (The scene was shocking and heartbreaking, particularly when Conci’s teenage son approached his father who moved away from him until he reached the gutter where he could fall to his death. Despite this nerve-wracking situation, authorities were calm and collected and told Conci that they will help him with his problems),” said Perez .

“Problema sa pamilya at sa iba pang bagay ang nakitang dahilan ng kaniyang pagtatangka sa kaniyang buhay (Family problems, among other matters, were seen as reasons for Conci’s attempt on his life),” Perez added.

The man was first taken to the Rural Health Unit (RHU) here for initial assessment and later to the Municipal Social Welfare Development (MSWD) in this town.

The municipal government of Alcala provided food and financial assistance to Flores, according to Perez.
