Industry veterans such as professional illustrators, graphic effects artists and comic creators will share their inspiring creative journeys and outstanding works in the Online Connectivity-themed 7th installment of the two-day Benilde Animation Festival (BAF) 2021 Online, from Friday, July 2 to Saturday, July 3, 2021.
The event serves as a virtual venue to impart knowledge and experience among industry fellows and students from the Animation Program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
The festival will likewise feature film screenings and competitions that will showcase and recognize the capstone projects of promising apprentices. Each work radiates the program’s philosophy: striking a balance between commercial and fine art animation, through the latest digital technology.
In Working for Yourself and for a Boss, Vancouver-based after effects artist and comic creator Raf De Leoz will reveal his strategies in self-publishing three comics and managing his time and energy to juggle studio work and passion projects. The co-founder and the first president of Benilde Animotion, his portfolio includes Star vs the Forces of Evil, 7D, Enchantimals, Hatchimals, and Starbeam.
Art director and DDB Group Philippines Multimedia Artist Margaux Janelle Chua will relay personal career tips in Authenticity in Creativity: My Art Journey. She will walk the participants through her adventures, from working on award-winning campaigns for the Department of Tourism and PepsiCo to being a children’s book author-illustrator for bestselling kidlit series Gail and Pablo by Robyn Rodriguez.
Animator for Monstronauts will be headlined by comic artists and Wirdong Komiks creators Julia Presbitero, Hannah Villanueva and Maria Karenina “Nina” Gomez. The trio will provide glimpses of their lives as cartoonists for the local independent game company behind Potion Punch 2 and Sproutle. Julia likewise worked on Penn Zero: Part Time Hero, Carmen Sandiego and the upcoming The Loud House Movie; Hannah animated for Go Astroboy Go, Glitch Techs and Archibald’s Next Big Thing; and Nina rendered her talent for Julius Jr., Jamie’s Got Tentacles
and Tom and Jerry.
Freelance motion designer, compositor, and visual effects artist Mark Cañega, who has animated for TV commercials and films for different local and international brands, will elaborate on the importance of the craft in his webinar Animation in the Advertising Agency.
Mark, known as the man behind the viral animated Fernando Amorsolo paintings, will likewise tackle how balancing personal and client projects makes one a better artist.
In Button Clicker’s Guide to the Magic Realm of CG, 3D generalist and WETA Digital Junior VAD Artist James Manlangit will unravel years-worth of tricks into honing the discipline. He will immerse the audience into the many dimensions of the discipline from TV shows, commercials and films.
Animator and 2D animation instructor Emerald Jane Juane will talk about passion, career expectations and hurdles in Creative Path Toward Animation Industry. Her exhilarating venture includes stints for The New Looney Tunes Cartoons, Tom and Jerry In New York, Teen Titans Go! Vs Teen Titans, and Rick and Morty.
