We know him mainly as a funnyman, a politician, but did you know Joey Marquez was once a janitor?
He worked as a janitor at Clark Air Base when he was a teenager.
He told “Tunay Na Buhay,” “I was around 14, 15 years old 15 then…”
According to Joey, he had to do it out of necessity after his parents separated.
Left in the care of his mom, Joey thought it best to earn his keep.
“Nahihiya ako sa nanay kong humingi ng pera…so from there, pumasok akong janitor. Ang suweldo ko nun 7 pesos a day,” he said.
The biggest lesson he learned?
“‘Wag susuko. Minsan kinakailangan mo talaga dumaan sa dilim, para maintindihan mo bakit may liwanag,” he said.
The young Joey would eventually find his way to the PBA, before being becoming a big star via “Palibhasa Lalake” in 1987.
He would then become mayor of Parañaque City from 1995 to 2004.
