5.3-magnitude quake jolts Surigao del Norte

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a magnitude 5.3 earthquake in Surigao del Norte on early Tuesday morning, June 8.

Phivolcs said the quake occurred around 5:41 a.m. and traced its epicenter at 68 kilometers northeast of Burgos, Surigao del Norte.

It was shallow at a depth of 1 kilometer.

Phivolcs said the tremor was "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in Dapa, Surigao del Norte.

Phivolcs' instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity II in Surigao City and Abuyog, Leyte; and Intensity I in Alangalang and Baybay, Leyte and Gingoog, Misamis Oriental.

The quake was tectonic in origin, which means the tremor was caused by the movement of an active fault in the area.

Phivolcs was not expecting damage to property, however aftershocks are likely to occur.
