NDRRMC: Three more dead due to TS 'Dante;' toll climbs to 9


Three more people in Calubian, Leyte died as the devastation wrought by tropical storm (TS) "Dante" in Eastern Visayas has slowly unfolded, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) confirmed Saturday, June 5.

The NDRRMC said a 51-year-old woman was caught in a flashflood while trying to cross a river in Barangay Casiongan in Calubian town. Local authorities identified the fatality as Joselita Montemor.

Accordingly, Montemor was securing her pigs when she got swept by the flood on Monday night, May 31.

Meanwhile, Ruel Salino, a two-year-old boy, and his brother, seven year-old Brando, were also confirmed dead after they got swept when their makeshift house was destroyed by flashflood due to heavy rain on Tuesday night.

The children were previously reported missing by the NDRRMC until their bodies were discovered floating on the sea, police said Thursday.

At present, one more person remained missing in Maco, Davao de Oro. The missing person was described to be as a man aged between 40 to 45 years old who was swept by flashflood at the height of Dante's fury earlier this week.

The additional deaths brought the death toll due to Dante to nine. Earlier, the NDRRMC recorded two fatalities in South Cotabato; and one each in Davao de Oro, Davao del Sur, Negros Occidental, and Cebu.

The NDRRMC said a total of 22,839 families or 93,683 individuals were affected in 279 barangays in Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Davao, SOCCSKSARGEN, and CARAGA.

Of these, 732 families or 2,753 individuals were sheltered in evacuation centers.

Agri-infra losses

The NDRRMC said damage to agriculture has reached P86,110,147.60 in Central Luzon (Region 3), CALABARZON (Region 4A), MIMAROPA (Region 4B), Bicol (Region 5), Western Visayas (Region 6), Davao (Region 11), SOCCSKSARGEN (Region 12), and CARAGA (Region 13).

On the other hand, a total of P53,730,000 worth of damage to infrastructure was incurred in MIMAROPA, Central Visayas, SOCCSKSARGEN, and CARAGA.

Assistance

In the aftermath of the storm, the NDRRMC said a total of P1,925,967.26 worth of assistance were already provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local government units in the affected areas in Central Luzon, MIMAROPA, Western Visayas, SOCCSKSARGEN, and CARAGA.
