Man suddenly goes wild, stabs self in front of 2 kids in Pangasinan

STA. MARIA, Pangasinan – A reportedly mentally-ill man suddenly went wild and stabbed himself in front of his two minor children and employees of the Eastern Pangasinan Agricultural College (EPAC) in Barangay Paitan here Thursday.

Police Major Arturo Melchor, Pangasinan police information officer, said that the man, Rolando Capillan, 50, of Barangay San Mariano here, boarded a tricycle for home with his two children in a popular mall in Rosales, this province.

Capillan suddenly instructed the tricycle driver to stop upon reaching the EPAC at 4:15 p.m.

He alighted from the tricycle and asked the school security guard for a knife to divide a sack he was carrying. “Gagamitin daw niya para hatiin ang sako (He asked for a knife to divide a sack),” police said.

Capillan received a knife but stabbed himself several times in the presence of his children and school staff. He walked towards the school campus bloodied and EPAC employees tried to pacify him but he continued to stab himself until he lost consciousness.

He was taken to a hospital in Tayug, this province, while his minor children were indorsed to the municipal social welfare and development office, case officer Police Staff Sgt. Christian Kenn B. Abuan said.

Abuan said Capillan has been taking medicines for mental illness. Capillan’s wife is an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), police learned.

He is still under observation as Friday afternoon.
