Senator Aquilino Pimentel III on Friday challenged the Department of Energy (DOE) to explain the 11-hour brownout at his residence in Fairlane Subdivision, Concepcion Uno, Marikina city from 10 p.m. June 1 to 9 a.m. of June 2.

‘’That is 11 hours long. Can DOE answer the following: 1. Did it really happen? 2. Why did it happen? (What caused it?) 3. Who is at fault or to blame for it?’’ he asked in his text message to Senate reporters.

Pimentel, a former Senate President, issued the challenge after DOE Secretary Alfonso Cusi said people claiming that power brownouts this week lasting 11 hours are engaged in pure ‘’dramatization.’’

Cusi said records of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) showed brownouts lasted from two to three hours only.

Such dramatization was meant ‘’to put panic into the heads of people’’, he added when he appeared before the House energy committee chaired by Representative Juan Miguel ‘’Mikey’’ M. Arroyo this morning.

Pimentel is one of the senators seeking an investigation into the brownouts so that they could confront the DOE and other agencies in the energy industry.
