Members of the House of Representatives’ progressive Makabayan bloc on Thursday, June 3, raised alarm over the prospects of President Duterte and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio running for vice president and president in the 2022 national elections.

Gabriela Women’s Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas likened to the infamous riding-in-tandem the possible bid of the President and his daughter for the country’s highest elective posts in next year’s polls.

“Kung tatakbong vice president si President Duterte at tatakbong President ang kanyang anak na si Sara Duterte, running in tandem ito na nakamamatay. Pagpapatuloy ito ng ‘kill, kill, kill’, pagpapahirap at paglimas ng pondo ng bayan (If President Duterte will run for vice presidency and his daughter Sara Duterte will run for president, this will be a deadly running in tandem. This will continue the administration’s ‘kill, kill, kill’ policy, making our people suffer, and corruption),” Brosas said during their group’s weekly virtual presser.

Bayan Muna Rep. Ferdinand Gaite said that if such tandem would indeed push through, it would show the Duterte administration’s attempt to skirt accountability.

“Iniisip siguro niya na pag siya’y tumakbo, ay ma-exculpate siya, mawawalan siya ng pananagutan dito sa kanyang mga kasalanan. Kung kaya’t ngayon, ang kanyang partido ay iniisip na patakbuhin siya as vice president (Maybe he isthinking that if he runs in the next elections, he will exculpated, he will escape from his liabilities. That’s why his party is urging his to run as vice president),” Gaite said.

“Malinaw na hindi dapat payagan ng mamamayan na siya ay mawalan ng accountability, marami siyang kasalanan na dapat siyang managot (Clearly, people should not allow this, he has a lot of mistakes to be accountable for),” he added.

Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate, for his part, maintained that the administration should focus on addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts, and not politics.

Members of the ruling political party Partido Demokratiko ng Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) on Monday, May 31, adopted a resolution pushing their chairman, the President, to run for vice president in 2022.

They also asked Duterte to choose his running mate for the presidential race.

After this, Albay Representative Joey Salceda announced that Duterte-Carpio will seek presidency, although he dismissed the possibility of father-daughter tandem next year.

“Talagang lantad na lantad na ang plano ni President Duterte na ikonsolida ang kanyang dinastiya at panatilihin sa posisyon ang kanyang mga alipores. Pero sawang sawa na ang mga Pilipino sa palpak na tugon ng gobyernong Duterte (It It clear that President Duterte plans to expand his dynasty and keep his cronies in position. But Filipinos are already sick of the failures of the Duterte administration),” Brosas said, vowing to fight the tandem.

“Wakasan na ang ganitong kalakaran, wakasan na ang dinastiya. Gaya ng panawagan nating wakasan na ang riding in tandem, wakasan rin nating itong running in tandem (Let’s end this practice, let’s end political dynasty. And like our call for an end to killings perpetuated by riding-in-tandem, we should stop this running in tandem),” Zarate also said.
