When it comes to a Disney film, you wouldn't expect anything less when it comes to visual effects. But with its latest offering, "Cruella," some of its CGI works take the back seat and let costumes tell the story.
With the film happening in London's 1970s fashion scene, the movie heavily relied on costumes. With the help of Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan, known for her works on films "A Room with a View" and "Mad Max: Fury Road," the film brought not only the origin story of the iconic villain, but also spectacular fashion moments.
Unlike the animated version of the character, the new Cruella isn't wearing the iconic fur coat and black shift dress. In fact, she has a total of 47 costume changes in the movie.
In a featurette, Beavan details her inspiration for the characters' looks, particularly on the movie's lead. According to her, Cruella's was influenced by the works of designers Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, bringing the best punk-inspired looks that are rebellious, show-stopping, and in every way, over-the-top.
"Fashion is Cruella's tool for revenge," says Emma Stone, the actress behind the two-toned hair character. "Jenny has created something really special."
But the challenge for the designer is to keep the style of Cruella distinct from her other persona, Estella, a young aspiring fashion designer, the woman before the fashion magnate comes to light.
"She becomes Cruella before the pop-up show and she wants her revenge, but when she's obviously back at the baroness, she's in disguise as Estella," Beavan says to InStyle. "So, we've kept her—getting her slightly sharper, but not too obvious."
