One person died and more than 700 families were rendered homeless by a fire that hit a residential area in Port Area, Manila on Wednesday.
The casualty was identified as 40-year-old Ricky Sebastian.
Based on initial investigation, the fire started at the fourth level of a four-story residential shanty owned by Hadji Usman alias “Junior” located at the back of Red Cross Manila.
The fire started at 5:45 p.m. and reached the third alarm at 6:03 p.m.
Authorities declared fire out at 2:26 a.m. on May 27.
The fire which lasted for almost nine hours burned around 300 to 500 houses, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.
The blaze also left an estimated P3 million damage to properties.
Residents affected by the fire received hot meals from the Manila Department of Social Welfare for breakfast and lunch.
The Manila Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) and City Engineering will deploy tents in the area that will serve as temporary shelter of the affected residents.
Evacuation sites have also been prepared inside and outside of Baseco, according to the Manila Public Information Office (PIO).
