And how she’s adjusting to her new-found married life

ONE STRONG MAMA For a decade, celebrity mom Bettina Carlos raised her daughter Gummy as a single mom

If there’s a disadvantage from being a celebrity, it’s the fact that your personal life is an open book. And celebrity mom Bettina Carlos can attest how challenging it has been, and still is.

During the recently held #EdenSpeaks event, Bettina looks backs to her experiences more than a decade ago, when she found out that she was pregnant with her daughter Gummy.

Down the memory lane
“I feel the fear of rejection, which I think everyone has whether you received the news of an unplanned pregnancy or whatever context you are in,” she says. “There’s always that fear of opening up and revealing that part of you and the questions of ‘tatanggapin pa ba ko? (Will they accept me)’ ‘Am I still wanted after this?’ ‘Will they still love me and want me the same?’”

But all those fears were gone when she felt the love and acceptance of her mother. And even though it was challenging to raise a kid as a single mom, she did it well with the help of the people who deeply care about her.

“There were times when Gummy was growing up, that I felt it was all just me. I am to work and I am to watch after her, which is the life mindset of a typical single mom. The load lightened when I found my source of personal salvation and started to have a community of other parents. Of course I still had my mom and grandmother who would look after Gummy when I had to work,” Bettina shares. “But inevitably there were several overwhelming situations that would make me ask myself—’how am I going to do all these things alone?’ There’s only 24 hours in a day and yet a gazillion things to do! Life didn’t come with a manual for parenting, especially, for solo parents. And 11 years ago there were no videos on YouTube or much resources available online to help navigate through this. That would have made the road an easier one to travel.”

From a single mom to a doting wife

After a decade, Bettina has finally “graduated” from being a single mom and found the man who she now calls her husband—Mikki Eduardo. The couple tied the knot last Dec. 2, 2020, in a private wedding held at Tagaytay Highlands.

And a “COVID bride” Bettina says that her marriage in the middle of pandemic thought her a lot of things. “So many things have happened in the last year. We met, got married, and moved all in one year,” she tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “And it’s not just changing status, it’s changing zip codes, even. And I guess what I’ve learned from all this is, at the at the end of the day, you have a choice. You can choose to panic with certain things happening and all, but this is the life that we have. And I can choose to enjoy it, embrace it.”

Bettina, together with her husband Mikki and daughter Gummy, recently moved to La Union. “It’s all new to me, you know? Being a single mom for so long, you’re so used to being in control,” she says. “But God blessed me with such an adventurous husband. I know I am to submit as a wife. So I take it as a joy to say ‘Let’s go! Since you’re the head of this family.’”

Finally, she says that she sees all thing that have happened in her life as blessings. “For so long as a single mom, I was the leader,” she says. “So now, what a blessing to just follow. So, I follow you whatever you want, wherever you want to go. It’s really how you choose to take it and I thank God that he allows me to see everything as a blessing the challenges included, the adjustment, the discomfort, even. It’s all enriching.”
