Muntinlupa police fine, warn 280 people for not wearing face masks, face shields


The Muntinlupa police have penalized an additional 280 people for not wearing face masks and face shields in violation of health protocols.

According to the police, the violators were nabbed between 5 a.m. of May 17 and 5 a.m of May 18 in the nine barangays in Muntinlupa.

Of the total, 109 people (37 fined and 72 warned) were nabbed for not wearing face masks and and 171 were warned for not wearing face shields.

By barangay, 46 were warned for not wearing face masks and face shields in Tunasan, 21 in Putatan including three who were fined, 20 in Bayanan including six who were fined, 10 in Alabang, 38 in Sucat including eight who were fined, 20 in Buli including four who were fined, 32 in Cupang including four who were fined, 69 in Ayala Alabang including five who were fined and 24 in Poblacion including seven who were fined.

The police have been implementing the health protocols based on City Ordinance 2020-109, passed in July last year, which requires all persons in Muntinlupa “to wear face masks at all times outside of their residences, at the workplace, when entering government buildings and offices, and while in public places.”

Under the ordinance, adult violators will be fined P300 for the first offense, P500 for the second, and P1,000 for the third and subsequent offenses.

If the violator is a minor, a stern warning is given for the first offense, withdrawal of scholarship grant from the local government or P300 fine for non-grantee for the second offense, and P500 for third and subsequent offenses. The fines will be imposed on the parents or guardians.

Mayor Jaime Fresnedi has appealed to the public to follow health protocols including the wearing of face masks and face shields, social distancing and frequent hand-washing to prevent the transmission of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

A report by OCTA Research on May 17 showed Muntinlupa is now classified as moderate risk with a 9.8 average daily attack rate.

As of May 17, Muntinlupa has 12,359 confirmed COVID-19 cases including 10,976 recoveries and 326 deaths, leaving 1,057 active cases.
