The popular ninja commando will have his solo movie.
“Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins” dropped its official trailer today on YouTube through Paramount Pictures.
Henry Golding, lead actor from “Crazy Rich Asians” will play the lead role of the Westerner taken in and trained by the Arashikage Ninja Clan.
Snake Eyes is one of the original characters in the G.I. Joe comic and one of its most popular. In the comic book, Snake Eyes is trained by the same ninja clan that produced Storm Shadow, another popular character from the GI Joe universe, who eventually resented Snake Eyes and became his arch nemesis. And while that has been the comic book version, the movie may see an update and an in-depth take on the origins of how Snake Eyes came to be.
Henry Golding said of his role, “In the GI Joe comics, Snake Eyes is one of those characters who has a kind of a mysterious past,” and added “he was known as the silent ninja.”
Writer Larry Hama, creator of the original G.I. Joe comic books, said that he came up with the “backstory that Storm Shadow takes Snake Eyes into the clan.” That may hold true still for this movie but as Golding stated, “we try to find the balance between what is pre-existing GI Joe lore and also finding a way to update it, giving people more.”
The Snake Eyes trailer features martial arts centric sequences and gun fights. Other figures from the GI Joe universe such as Storm Shadow, The Baroness, and Scarlett are seen in the official trailer.
The movie also stars Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Ursula Corbero as The Baroness, Huraka Abe as Akiko, Tahehiro Hira as Kenta and Iko Uwais as Hard Master.
“Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins” is scheduled for theatrical release on July 23, 2021.
